Ben Sam and Hiro Namu were the stars of the show for the host nation in the men's final as they helped guide their side to a 6-4 triumph in a high-scoring encounter at the Wan Smolbag Hockey Stadium.

Edmo Iasi and Willie Kawel also got on the scoresheet for Vanuatu, who progressed to the next round of the Hockey Series by virtue of the victory.

Solomon Islands secured third place following a comfortable 4-0 win over Tonga in the other match held in the men's tournament today.

The success for Vanuatu came after their women had been beaten 3-2 in the women's final.

Fiji effectively ended the match as a contest when they raced into a 3-0 lead inside the first 17 minutes thanks to Tiara Dutta, Akosita Adigoneca and Tailah Ah Yuk.

The Fijian side took their foot of the gas, however, and allowed Vanuatu a way back into the match.

Anna Job and Evelyne Kalsong reduced the deficit to one but Fiji held on to claim a narrow victory.

Solomon Islands finished third after they overcame Tonga 4-1.

The competition is the first International Hockey Federation (FIH) event in the Pacific country since the 2014 Oceania Youth Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament.

The FIH has launched the Hockey Series this year, with events taking place across the world.

Teams who have not qualified for the new top-tier Hockey Pro League will contest the tournaments, which will offer places at next year's Hockey Series Finals.

Countries who make the Finals will earn the chance to qualify for Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification events.
