Germany's men's and women's teams had a winning start on day one on their home ground of Hamburg when the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) World Championships got underway.

The flagship event, which runs until August 26, will feature 16 men's teams and 12 women's teams vying for the world title in what is one of the largest international Para-sport events outside the Paralympic Games.

The hosts' men's team started their campaign with a Pool A match against Morocco, whom they defeated 84-40.

The evening concluded with Germany's women, beaten in the last final four years ago by Canada, playing their opening Pool B fixture against Algeria – and earning an emphatic 87-24 win.

Elsewhere, in two women’s matches that preceded the Opening Ceremony at the Wilhelmsburger Inselparkarena, The Netherlands defeated Spain 86-24, and China beat Argentina 60-3.

The defending women's champions Canada, drawn in Pool A, have their first match against Britain tomorrow afternoon.

Reigning Paralympic gold medallists the United States will begin against France tomorrow.
