Russia overcame Denmark to secure a semi-final berth ©IHF

Defending champions Russia battled to a narrow victory over Denmark to reach the semi-finals at the Women's Youth World Handball Championship in Kielce in Poland.

The Russian side maintained their quest for a second consecutive title with a 27-25 win against their Danish opponents at the Kielce University of Technology.

Russia will play Sweden, 27-17 victors over The Netherlands in their quarter-final today, for a place in the tournament's showpiece contest.

Isabelle Anderson led the scoring charts for Sweden as she found the net on seven occasions in a fine individual performance.

Hungary produced a dominant display to secure their place in the semi-finals as they dispatched Spain 33-20 at the Legionów Hall.

Their opponents in the last four will be Asian champions South Korea, who emerged victorious from a dramatic encounter with Germany.

The German team had equalised with 10 seconds until the final buzzer before South Korea went up the other end to score what proved to be the winning goal to earn a 30-29 triumph.

The semi-finals are due to be held on Saturday (August 18) following a rest day tomorrow.
