Ante Barac's second-half goal denied Russian universities a clean sweep of the football gold medals as the European Universities Games concluded in Coimbra today.

Barac found the net in the 66th minute to hand the University of Split a narrow 1-0 win over the Smolensk State Academy of Physical Education Sport at the CUS Football Stadium.

Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University from Ukraine bounced back from their semi-final defeat by sealing third place.

The Kyiv-based side beat the University of Vechta from Germany 3-2 on penalties.

The Siberian Federal University needed penalties to claim gold in the women's final as their match with the University of Montpellier finished level at 1-1 after extra time.

The Russian-based team held their nerve in the dreaded shoot-out as they were on the right side of a 5-4 scoreline to be crowned European Universities Games champions.

Penalties were also required to determine third place, with the University of Frankfurt emerging victorious over the Technical University of Munich in an all-German affair.

The women's basketball title was secured by the University of Vienna in Austria following their 63-53 win over their opponents from France-based the University of Toulouse II - Jean Jaures.

The University of Strasbourg had earlier finished third by virtue of a comfortable 67-47 victory against the team from the University of Valencia in Spain.

The University of Alicante in Spain took the women's futsal gold medal after they beat Russian-based Moscow Polytechnical University 7-6 in a see-saw final.

Jagiellonian University claimed third place following a 5-2 win over fellow Poland-based university the Angelus Silesius State School of Higher Vocational Education in Walbrzych.

The finals in the three sports brought the 2018 European Universities Games to a close.

A total of 3,293 athletes from 291 universities took part in the event.

The next edition of the biennial Games is due to take place in Serbia's capital Belgrade in 2020.
