The University of Rennes swept the men's and women's rugby sevens gold medals as the European Universities Games reached its penultimate day in Coimbra.

Rennes produced dominant performances in the two finals at the CUS Main Stadium in the Portuguese city.

Their women's side thrashed the University of Seville 41-0 in a one-sided gold medal encounter.

Yolaine Yengo was the star of the show for the French university, recording a superb individual haul of 26 points to spearhead her team to victory.

The bronze medal was secured by the University of Coimbra after they beat the University of Porto 15-0.

Rennes' men's team were made to work much harder for their triumph as they edged the University of Parma 10-5.

In the men's bronze medal match, San Jorge University overcame the Ecological University of Bucharest 14-7 in a closely-contested match.

Elsewhere at the event in Coimbra today, the Russian-based Smolensk State Academy of Physical Education Sport and Tourism secured their place in the final of the men's football tournament with a 2-1 win over Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University from Ukraine.

Their opponents in tomorrow's gold medal clash will be the University of Split from Croatia, who beat German-based University of Vechta by the same scoreline in the other semi-final clash.

The 2018 edition of the European Universities Games concludes tomorrow.
