Romanian and Russian crews progressed to the women’s four final at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Poznan.

The Romanian team were forced to battle hard against British and New Zealand crews in their heat, with only one securing a direct path to the final.

Romania were able to edge their rivals in a sprint to advance.

They were joined in the final by Russia, whose team held off the challenge of Belarus to progress.

Portugal's Dinis and Alfonso Costa advanced through to the semi-finals of the men's lightweight double sculls event.

The duo had recently earned gold at the European Universities Games at Coimbra.

They were hoping for further success in Poznan and the brothers ensured themselves of direct passage through to the semi-finals by winning their heat.

Julian and Jonathan Schreiber of Germany won the second heat, while Jacob and Finten McCarthy of Ireland held off Italian competition to progress in the third.

Chile's Cesar Abaroa and Eber Sanhueza Rojas crossed the line first in heat four to seal a semi-final place and avoid dropping into the repechage.

Four heats of the women’s single sculls took place with two rowers advancing from each.

Belarus' Desislava Georgieva and Ruth Siddorn of Britain pushed each other in the first heat with the duo both progressing as a consequence.

Germany's Lisa Gutfleisch and Brazil's Milena Viana clinched top two places in the second heat, while Emily Kallfelz of the United States and New Zealand's Samantha Voss managed the feat in the third.

Ukraine's Kateryna Dudchenko and Peixin Zhang of China advanced from the final heat.

Competition continues tomorrow in Poznan.
