Australia were crowned winners of the Junior Men's Softball World Championship for the fourth time after beating Japan in the final at Prince Albert in Canada.

The match at the Prime Ministers' Park Field was the second meeting between the teams in two days.

It followed Australia beating Japan 4-2 yesterday to secure their place in the final.

The result saw Japan drop into the bronze medal match with New Zealand, the winners of the tie advancing to the final with Australia.

Defending champions Japan clinched a 5-3 victory in the tie to keep their hopes of a title defence alive.

Their hopes were ended by a superb display from pitcher Layton Reid, with the Australian achieving a no-hitter.

Michael Ludkin scored the first run of the final for Australia, but Wataru Seki levelled the scores after Australian catcher Jacob Donaldson couldn’t catch a high pitch, allowing him to score from second base.

It was the only run conceded by Australia in the final, with Ryan King and Dawson Summers giving them a 3-1 advantage.

The Australian team pulled away in the final innings.

A further two runs would ultimately see them clinch a 5-1 victory.

The result assured Australia of a fourth title in total at the Championships and a first for 10 years.

Japan and New Zealand were left settling for second and third place respectively.

Classification matches for the remaining teams at the tournament took place yesterday.
