USA Red secured victory at the USA Softball International Cup at Irvine by beating Japan in the final.

The USA Red team was comprised of players set to form the nation's squad at the World Championship in the Japanese city of Chiba next month.

Having emerged as the winners of Pool A they faced the challenge of Japan, who had finished top of Pool B, at Bill Barber Park.

The USA Red team opened up a 4-1 lead in the final before Japan closed the gap to just one point.

A third home run of the game from Valerie Arioto helped the American team pull clear again, with Kelsey Stewart and Kirsti Merritt helping them seal a 10-5 success.

A second American team, USA Blue, were confirmed as the third place finishers.

They secured a narrow 7-6 victory over China.

Scrap Yard Fast Pitch, a Texas-based professional team, were beaten 7-0 by Canada in a playoff for fifth place.

The Czech Republic ended their participation in the tournament on a high with a 3-2 win over Venezuela, while Puerto Rico beat Mexico 2-1.

Women's softball is due return to the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020.
