Helle Frederiksen delighted the home crowd by claiming the elite women's long-distance title on the final day of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Multisport World Championships in Denmark.

The event featured a three kilometres swim, 121.5km cycle and 30.7km run on the island of Fyn in south-central Denmark.

Frederiksen, 37, clocked a time of 5 hours 49min 4sec to triumph by a margin of more than two minutes.

Chile’s Bárbara Riveros Díaz took the silver medal in 5:51:22, while Australia’s Annabel Luxford came away with the bronze in 5:55:47.

Victory for Frederiksen saw her upgrade on her silver medal-winning performance from last year.

In the elite men’s long-distance race, Spain’s Pablo Dapena González came out on top in 5:19:30.

Switzerland’s Ruedi Wild finished second in 5:22:13, beating third-placed Marko Albert of Estonia by 14 seconds.

Spanish city Pontevedra is due to host the 2019 ITU Multisport World Championships.
