Spain's Diego Botín and Iago Lopez were crowned winners of the men's 49er class at the European Championships in the seaside town of Gdynia in Poland today.

The duo began the day three points behind home favourites Lukasz Przybytek and Pawel Kolodzinski.

Several races took place earlier in the day, with the medal race offering double points to ensure a tense finale to the competition.

Przybytek and Kolodzinski would see their hopes ended in disastrous fashion, with the pair struggling in today's racing, including a disqualification in the medal race.

It allowed Botín and Lopez to clinch the title with a second place finish in the medal race, moving the Spaniards onto a total score of 69 points.

Poland’s Dominik Buksak and Szymon Wierzbicki clinched second place on 74 points, with Britain’s reigning world champions Dylan Fletcher-Scott and Stuart Bithell a point back in third.

Przybytek and Kolodzinski would eventually end in sixth.

There was a similar outcome in the women’s 49erFX event, as overnight leaders Carla Munté Carrasco and Marta Munté Carrasco of Spain dropped to sixth on the final day of action.

Their struggles allowed Norway’s Helene Naess and Marie Ronningen to win gold by a comfortable margin.

The pairing finished on 59 points, with Germany’s Victoria Jurczok and Anika Lorenz ending second on 81.

Jurczok and Lorenz won the silver medal due to winning the medal race, having ended on the same final points total as Britain’s Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth.

Italy’s Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti maintained their lead on the final day to win the Nacra 17 competition with 34 points.

New Zealand’s Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders were second on 47, with Fernando Echavarri and Tara Pacheco of Spain third with 56.

Lin Cenholt and CP Lubeck would finish as the third best European team.
