The event featured a one kilometre swim and 5km run on the island of Fyn in south-central Denmark.

Hannesdottir completed the swim in a time of 12min and 16sec to lead the race into transition.

The Icelandic athlete would continue to impress on the run as she pulled away from several of her closest rivals.

She would finish the competition with a time of 31:15 and enjoyed a clear margin of victory.

Hannesdottir’s nearest challenger was Britain’s Hannah Kitchen, who completed her effort in a time of 32:03.

Bronze was earned by Serbia’s Vida Medic in 32:17, with Denmark’s junior athlete Augusta Grønberg Christensen clocking 32:27 to finish just outside the podium after an impressive display.

The men’s title was secured by Belgium’s Emmanuel Lejeune, who achieved a time of 27:46 in the competition.

Having come out of the run 53 seconds behind Australia’s Nathan Breen, the Belgian made huge inroads on his rival during the run.

Lejeune produced the fastest run time of 15:09, which saw him cross the line in 27:46 to take the victory.

Breen ended as the runner-up in 27:57 to finish as the runner-up.

France’s Alexis Kardes completed the podium, as he was three seconds adrift of Breen at the finish.
