Home favourites Dan John and Eric Stadie beat second seeds Mateusz Lysikowski and Mateusz Paszkowski today to secure their place in the men’s quarter-finals at the World University Beach Volleyball Championship in Munich.

The German duo triumphed 21-12, 21-13 against their Polish opponents at the Munich Olympic Park.

It sets up a last-eight encounter with The Netherlands' Ruben Penninga and Tom van Steenis, who defeated Spain’s Alejandro and Javier Huerta Pastor 19-21, 22-20, 15-13.

Among those also through to the quarter-finals is Spain’s Óscar Jiménez Gutiérrez and Hugo Rojas Martínez after they overcame Canada’s Gabriel Burlacu and Jake MacNeil 21-17, 23-25, 15-12.

Next up for them is set to be Austria’s Felix Friedl and Maximilian Trummer, who beat Czech Republic’s Jakub Gala and Martin Pihera 21-19, 21-18.

The two other quarter-finals pit Switzerland’s Florian Breer and Yves Haussener against Australia’s Paul Burnett and Maximilian Guehrer, and France's Olivier Barthelemy and Romain Di Giantommaso against Germany's Bennet and David Poniewaz. 

Breer and Haussener defeated Belarus’ Dzmitry Abramenka and Pavel Piatrushka 23-21, 21-10, while Burnett and Guehrer overcame the United States’ Colton Cowell and Brett Rosenmeier 21-14, 21-12.

Barthelemy and Di Giantommaso beat Cyprus' Georgios Chrysostomou and Antonis Liotatis 21-13, 21-12 before the top-seeded Poniewaz brothers' 21-10, 21-12 win over Chile's Pablo Prieto Figueroa and Ignacio Alejandro Zavala Vuletich.

In the women's event, second seeds Emily Sonny and Torrey Van Winden of the US are through to the quarter-finals thanks to a 21-10, 23-21 victory over Belarus' Lizaveta Chabai and Viktoryia Siakretava.

Standing between them and a place in the semi-finals are The Netherlands' Katja Stam and Pleun Ypma, who defeated Estonia's Heleene Hollas and Liisa Soomets 21-16, 21-18.

Third seeds María Belén Carro Márquez de Acuña and Paula Soria Gutiérrez of Spain are also through to the last eight courtesy of a 21-18, 21-15 win at the expense of Czech Republic's Nicole Dostalova and Anna Komarkova.

Awaiting them in the quarter-finals are Switzerland's Fabienne Geiger and Anja Licka following their 21-13, 21-16 victory over New Zealand's Alice Bain and Olivia MacDonald.

Fourth seeds Kaho Sakaguchi and Reika Murakami of Japan suffered a surprise 21-14, 13-21, 15-17 loss at the hands of ninth seeds Zoé Vergé-Dépré and Esmée Böbner of Switzerland.

The reward for Vergé-Dépré and Böbner is a meeting with Austria's Nadine Strauss and Franziska Friedl, who overcame Australia's Nicole Laird and Brittany Kendall 21-17, 21-13.

The one other quarter-final is set to see Canadian twins Nicole and Megan McNamara face the US's Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss. 

The McNamaras beat Czech Republic's Tereza Kotlasova and Daniela Resova 22-20, 21-14 prior to Coppola and Nuss defeating Japan's Asami Shiba and Satono Ishitsubo 21-15, 21-16.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals are scheduled for tomorrow before the finals are held on Friday (July 13).
