The Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) is to send its first-ever refugees team to a G1-level tournament.

Nine students from the Azraq Taekwondo Academy in Jordan - seven boys and six girls - will take part at the 2018 El Hassan Cup International Open G1.

Competition will take place in Amman, Jordan's capital city, from tomorrow until July 8.

"This will be the first time in taekwondo history during which an entire refugee team participates in a G1 tournament," a THF statement said.

"Taking part in such an event will serve as an unforgettable experience for young refugee athletes from Azraq, who have been training hard and who are extremely motivated to do well."

Academy head coach Asif Sabah will accompany the refugee team to Amman.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue officially announced his plan to establish the THF in his speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, on the 2015 International Day of Peace.

It aims to teach the sport and stage educational programmes with refugees and displaced people around the world.

THF projects are also up and running in Turkey, Djibouti, Burundi and Nepal.

There are currently more than 70 students who attend weekly training sessions covering both technical taekwondo and educational activities at the Azraq Refugee Camp.

The people living there have fled the conflict in neighbouring Syria.
