Junior and under-23 events took place on the first day of competition ©2018 ECA Canoe Marathon European Championships

Hungary’s Zsófia Czéllai-Vörös won the women's under-23 K1 title as the 2018 European Canoe Marathon Championships began at Metković in Croatia.

Czéllai-Vörös secured an impressive victory on the Neretva river, as she finished the event in a time of 1 hour, 43min and 34.94sec.

She was followed by her team-mate Sára Mihalik, who was 2min 27sec down on the winner.

The podium was completed by Britain’s Samantha Rees-Clark, after she finished 3:50 down.

Hungary’s strong start to the Championships continued with Dóra Horányi winning the C1 junior women’s competition in a time of 1:03:26.78.

Poland’s Adrinna Antos and Hungary’s Zsófia Csorba rounded off the podium, with the duo ending 1:47 and 2:17 down on Horányi’s time.

Emma Russell triumphed in the final women’s event of the opening day, with the Briton achieving a time of 1:30:23.91.

It proved a narrow victory, as Hungary’s Viktória Nagy was just 1.09 seconds behind.

Belgium’s Joke Plas earned the bronze medal, as she ended 38 seconds down on Russell.


A third Hungarian title came in the men’s C1 junior event, with Jordán Fajta winning in 1:35:04.25.

Poland’s Adrian Klos was 15 seconds adrift to finish as the runner-up, while Hungary’s Márton Horváth was two minutes behind in third.

Ireland’s Ronan Foley clinched the men’s K1 junior crown in a time of 1:41:02.63.

The podium was completed by Denmark’s Thorbjørn Rask and Hungary’s Vince Petro, who were 16 and 18 seconds behind Foley.

Competition will continue tomorrow with the final junior and under-23 events.

Senior action will begin on Saturday (July 7), with the Championships concluding the following day.
