Japan's Sayaka Sato suffered a second round defeat at the U.S. Open Badminton Championships in Fullerton, California.

The second seed clashed with London 2012 Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China at the Titan Gym on the campus of California State University.

A closely fought opening game was eventually edged by Li.

The Chinese star pulled clear in the second game to eventually seal a 22-20, 21-9 victory at the Badminton World Federation Super 300 event.

Li is now due to face Kim Hyo Min, who won an all-South Korean clash with Lee Se Yeon by a 21-15, 21-13 score.

Home favourite Beiwen Zhang maintained her strong start to the tournament, as the top seed won her second match in straight games.

The American secured a 21-14, 21-17 win over China's Zhang Yiman to set up a match against Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong, who beat England's Chloe Birch 21-9, 21-15.

Third seed Michelle Li claimed an impressive victory over Rachel Honderich in an all-Canadian match.

France’s Brice Leverdez suffered a surprise defeat in the men’s draw as the third seed came unstuck against Heo Kwang Hee.

The South Korean player clinched a straight games 23-21, 21-12 win to reach the quarter-final.

Heo is now scheduled to face the challenge of India’s Ajay Jayaram, who battled to a 19-21, 21-12, 21-16 win over Brazil’s Ygor Coelho.

Following Lin Dan of China being eliminated yesterday, Leverdez had been the next highest seed in the competition.

His exit will see attention turn towards Thailand's Khosit Phetpradab, a 21-14, 21-14 winner against Canada's Jason Ho-Shue.

Phetpradab now is due to take on China's Lu Guangzu, following his 18-21, 22-20, 21-17 success against Thailand's Suppanyu Avihingsanon.
