Britain’s Alice Tai achieved a world record on the opening day of the World Para Swimming World Series event in Sheffield.

The home athlete triumphed in the women's 100 metres freestyle at the Ponds Forge International Centre.

Tai, an S8 class athlete, produced a world record time of 1min 3.66sec to top the standings on 1,050 points.

Canada’s Aurelie Rivard and Britain’s Tully Kearney rounded off the podium, after ending on 982 and 976 points.

Further British success came when Maisie Summers-Newton produced a world record time of 1:33.92 in the women’s 100m breaststroke competition.

The SB6 swimmer was awarded a tally of 1,033 points, with Uzbekistan’s Fotimakhon Amilova and Louise Fiddes completing the top three.

Defending men’s series champion Daniel Dias claimed victory in his first race of the three day event.

The Brazilian won the men’s 100m freestyle competition with a total of 940 points, with the S5 class swimmer followed by Nelson Crispin of Colombia and Brazil’s Phelipe Rodrigues.

Crispin triumphed in the 100m breaststroke race, ending ahead of home athletes Scott Quin and Conner Morrison.

Competition is set to continue until Sunday (June 3).

Swimmers' performances are ranked on a points scale depending on their classification throughout the event, which are used to determine the final champions.

The series is set to conclude next month, with the final event taking place in Berlin from June 7 to 10.
