Prague is poised to host the Canoe Slalom European Championships with competition scheduled to begin tomorrow.

An Opening Ceremony has already taken place in the Czech capital city prior to the event.

Action will begin with heats in the men’s C2 and K1 competitions taking place tomorrow morning, along with the women’s C1 event.

Heats will continue in the afternoon with the women’s K1 and men’s C1.

A new champion will be crowned in the men’s C2 competition on Saturday (June 2), with France’s Pierre Picco and Hugo Biso having retired from the sport after last year’s World Championships in Pau.

Britain’s Kimberley Woods and Poland’s Mateusz Polaczyk will seek to defend their women’s C1 and men’s K1 titles on the same day.

Team competitions in all three events are also scheduled to take place.

The Championships will conclude on Sunday (June 3) with the semi-finals and finals of the women’s K1 and men’s C1 disciplines, as well as the team races for the two categories.

Austria’s Corinna Kuhnle will look to retain her K1 crown, while Slovakia’s Alexander Slafkovsky is the current men’s C1 champion.

More than 200 athletes from 27 countries are set to take part across the three day Championships.

The men’s kayak will have the largest field with 65 kayakers on the start line, followed by 44 kayakers in the women’s event.

It is the second time the Championships have been organised in Czech Republic, following the event in the town of Roudnice in 1998.

Promotional events have taken place in the build-up to the Championships, with a traditional event called Paddleride held, along with a “riverside cross” event which connects canoeing and biathlon.
