Kenya clinched their first African Women's Sevens Championship title after they beat Uganda in the final in Botswana.

The Kenyan team cruised to the title with a comfortable 29-7 win against the Ugandan side in Gaborone.

The triumph saw them replace South Africa, who opted not to defend their crown to focus their preparations on July's World Cup in San Francisco, as the African champions.

Michelle Omondi and Janet Akello both scored twice in the opening half as Kenya led 22-0 at the break.

The Kenyan Lionesses then took their foot off the gas after the restart but were still able to coast to a commanding win.

Kenya outclassed Zambia 41-7 in the quarter-finals before booking their spot in the final with a 27-0 win against Madagascar.

Uganda were made to work much harder for their place in the tournament's showpiece contest as they edged Tunisia 10-5 in a dramatic last four match.

They had earlier beaten Senegal 12-5 in the quarter-finals.

Uganda proved no match for Kenya, who competed at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, in the final.

Kenya were the pre-tournament favourites due to the absence of South Africa and came into the event under pressure to deliver after team manager Camiline Awuor said the title was "ours to lose" before the two-day competition got underway.
