Great Britain's Ali Jawad was among the winners today at the World Para Powerlifting European Open Championships in France.

Jawad, the reigning Paralympic silver medallist and world champion in 2014, triumphed in the under 54 kilograms division today in the Fiolet Weightlifting Room in Berck-sur-Mer.

He emerged the comfortable winner with a best lift of 165kg.

France's Axel Bourlon took silver with 154kg while there was also British bronze for Adam Alderman, with 149kg.

Ukraine's Mariana Shevchuk broke the world record elsewhere today with a 126kg total in the women's under 55kg event.

Ruza Kuzieva of Uzbekistan took silver in the open format, with 115kg, while Besra Duman of Turkey took third, with a junior world record 114kg.

Paschalis Kouloumoglou of Greece prevailed in the men's under 59kg class on countback after both he and second-placed Juan Carlos Garrido of Chile managed 179kg.

Bruno Carra of Brazil took a distant third with 172kg.

Poland's Mariusz Tomczyk was fourth, so took European silver, with 153kg, while fifth-placed Juhani Kokko of Finland was third in the continental competition.
