Emerging Cypriot star Marios Georgiou edged home favourite Tin Srbić to qualify in top spot in the high bar event at the International Gymnastics Federation World Challenge Cup in Osijek in Croatia.

Georgiou, the 20-year-old who shot to prominence with two gold medals at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, and reigning world champion Srbić registered the same score of 14.067.

The Cypriot, winner of the parallel bar and floor titles at the Games in the Australian city, was given first place by virtue of a higher execution score.

Srbić seemingly left something in reserve for the final, which he will start as favourite.

The 21-year-old became the first Croatian to be crowned an artistic gymnastics world champion when he claimed the high bar title at the 2017 World Championships in Montreal.

Georgiou and Srbić were among the eight gymnasts to secure a place in the final.

Kirill Prokopev of Russia was the star performer on the floor as his routine yielded a score of 15.200.
