The English had triumphed as recently as in 2014 today but were completely outclassed by a side who had emerged victorious the previous year.

Philippines will now face China 'B' in the quarter-finals after they beat Germany 7-5 today.

Chinese Taipei also impressed in a 7-1 win over Greece.

United States lie in wait for a place in the last-four after they beat Finland 7-5.

Spain also beat Sweden 7-3 while China 'A" edged Australia 7-4.

These two winning teams will now meet in tomorrow's quarter-final.

Defending champions Austria will face The Netherlands in the other last-eight clash after each side won respective second round encounters yesterday.

Bringing together the world’s best players in 32 two-man teams, the World Cup of Pool is one of nine-ball’s biggest events with a prize fund of $250,000 (£184,000/€209,000).

Action in Shanghai is due to run until Sunday (May 20), when the semi-finals and final are scheduled to be held.
