Ukraine’s Anatolii Voloshynov beat Russia's Viktor Nemkov in the combat men's 100 kilograms final to secure his country's place at the summit of the medal standings after the opening day of the 2018 European Sambo Championships here.

Voloshynov was trailing 4-0 before going onto knock down his opponent twice and claim an 8-4 victory.

It meant that Ukraine finished today on four gold medals, one more than the ever-dominant Russians.

Azerbaijan’s Nabi Mammadov and Belarus’ Siarhei Firsau were the bronze medallists. 

Ukraine also tasted success in the two other combat men’s categories with Bohdan Babenko, the 2015 world silver medallist, and Vladyslav Rudniev, the 2017 world bronze medallist, winning the 57kg and 74kg titles respectively.

Babenko made short work of Bulgaria’s Georgi Kandov in the 57kg final.

The bronze medals went to Armenia’s Mkhitar Mkhitaryan and Russia’s Rodion Askanakov

Rudniev, meanwhile, registered a 1-0 win in the 74kg final as Belarus’ Eduard Muravitski had to settle for European silver for the second consecutive year.

Rounding out the podium were Bulgaria’s Mihail Nikolov and Russia’s Nikolai Goncharov.

Ukraine’s one other triumph came in the women’s 72kg division with Nataliya Smal edging defending champion Nino Odzelashvili of Georgia in the final.

Smal upgraded on the bronze medal she won in 2017.

Moldova’s Victoria Bolohan and Russia’s Anastasiia Khomiachkova were the bronze medallists.

Two of Russia’s three gold medals came in women’s competition.

Olga Titova eased to a 5-0 win over Ukraine’s Anastasiia Novikova, the 2017 world silver medallist and 2017 European bronze medallist, in the women’s 48kg final.

The bronze medals went to Romania’s Daniela Mihaela Chiss and Belarus’ Leila Abbasava. 

In the women’s 60kg final, Russia’s Iana Shevchenko proved too strong for Belarus’ Krystsina Kazanoi in a 6-1 win.

Ukraine’s Anastasiya Shevchenko and Spain’s Yaiza Jimenez Lopez were the bronze medallists.

The other Russian gold medallist was Anton Konovalov, who secured the men’s 90kg title after recording a stoppage win over Georgia’s Paata Ghviniashvili, the 2017 European silver medallist, when leading 2-0.

Rounding out the podium were Serbia’s Dmitri Gerasimenko and Belarus’ Aliaksei Stsepankou.

Armenia and Belarus also came away with gold medals today thanks to Tigran Kirakosyan and Uladzislau Sayapin respectively.

World champion Kirakosyan prevailed in the men’s 52kg final, defeating Georgia’s Givi Nadareishvili 5-2.

Ukraine’s Roman Bratchenko and Russia’s Evgenii Eremin were the bronze medallists. 

Sayapin, the 2017 Sambo World Cup gold medallist, came from behind to overcome Georgia’s Mindia Luluashvili 2-1 in the men’s 68kg final.

The bronze medals went to Azerbaijan’s Emil Hasanov and Russia’s Evgeniy Sukhomlinov.

Action in the Greek capital is due to continue tomorrow when a further nine categories take centre stage, comprising the men’s 57kg, 74kg and 100kg, the women’s 52kg, 64kg and 80kg, and combat men's 62kg, 82kg and over 100kg.
