Switzerland's Henry Tschopp heads the men's leaderboard after the first day of the International University Sports Federation World University Golf Championship in The Philippines.

Tschopp enjoyed a strong first round at the Pradera Verde Golf and Country Club in Lubao.

He carded a four-under-par round of 68 on the newly-built course in Barangay Prado Siongco.

The Swiss golfer has a narrow advantage, with Japan's Taisei Shimizu lying just one shot down.

Hong Kong's Matthew Hung Hai Cheung lies on three-under-par, with his compatriot Jonathan Ka Long Lai and Malaysia’s Muhammad Afif Muhammad Razif a further shot back.

France’s Elodie Chapelet and Hong Kong’s Hei Nam Isabella Leung share the lead in the women’s event.

The duo both achieved one-over-par rounds of 73.

Mexico’s Ana Paula Ramirez Perea is one shot adrift in third place.

France currently lead the women’s team competition, with their three member squad on five-over-par.

Hong Kong and South Korea share second a shot behind the leaders.

The men’s team event sees Japan and Hong Kong share first place on three-under-par.

The biennial Championships were last held in 2016 at the Planchetorte Golf Course in Brive in France.

Nearly 80 male and female student golfers took part in the tournament.
