Nigerian taekwondo star Emmanuel Peters has backed the Agoma Open Championship to produce more successful athletes from the country.

Peters won a silver medal in the over-83 kilograms division at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games when taekwondo was introduced as a demonstration sport.

He has hailed the importance of the Agoma Open, which he organises.

This year's edition concluded this weekend in the country's largest city Lagos.

Chika Chukwumerije, who earned a bronze medal in the men's over-80kg event at Beijing 2008, is among the Nigerian taekwondo players to have graduated from the event.

"My main aim of organising this tournament for 17 years running now is to discover more talents and keep the sport busy in the country," Peters told Vanguard.

"I am also giving back to the sport that made me who I am today.

"I spend so much putting the tournament together.

"But seeing these kids showing off their skills gives me tremendous joy and satisfaction and we will continue to do it."

More than 20 Nigerian states were represented at the event, while neighbouring Niger also competed.
