Australia's Matthew Wearn and New Zealand's Sam Meech continued their head-to-head battle as the pair remained separated by just one point as the Laser European Championships continued in the French port city of La Rochelle.

Wearn and Meech are among the non-Europeans to have been allowed into the field for the event and the duo have proved dominant so far.

Both sailors had their most damaging result to date with Wearn ending 12th in the opening race of the day, while Meech was 15th.

Their scores in the race are currently discarded from their total score, but Meech was able to add a victory to his total in the second competition of the day.

Wearn retained his one point advantage by ending third, with the New Zealander heading the standings on 10 points.

Sweden's Jesper Stalheim lies third overall but heads the European standings, as he moved on to a total of 18 points for the Championships.

There remains a Dutch one-two in the women's laser radial event, as defending champion Marit Bouwmeester moved into first place.

She began the day five points down on team-mate Maxime Jonker, but her compatriot recorded 11th and 14th place finishes today to relinquish her lead.

Bouwmeester now tops the standings on 22 points, with Jonker behind on 24.

United States' Paige Railey completes the top three on 27.

The men's laser radial competition is led by Slovenia's Nik Pletikos, who extended his advantage in the competition.

He began the day one point ahead of Federico Tocchi, but his Italian rival finished ninth in the second race of the day to lose ground.

Pletikos tops the standings on 18 points, with Tocchi drifting back to 25.

Poland's Aleksander Arian rounds off the top three on 29 points.

This week’s event, which involves 330 sailors from 48 nations, is a key test before the Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, in July and August.

Racing continues tomorrow.
