Russia were the dominant force on day three of the World Taekwondo President’s Cup for the Europe region, claiming three out of the four senior gold medals on offer in Athens.

Among the country’s winners was Sarmat Tcakoev, who beat fellow Russian Boris Krasnov in the men’s under 68 kilograms final at the Ano Liosia Olympic Indoor Hall.

The young rising talent had earlier defeated world silver medallist Si Mohamed Ketbi of Belgium in the semi-finals and two-time Olympic medallist Alexey Denisenko of Russia in the quarter-finals.

Ketbi was joined on the third step of the podium by Spain’s Javier Perez Polo.

There was further success for Russia in men’s competition with Magomed Gagiev overcoming Italy’s Vito Dell’Aquila in the under 54kg gold medal match.

Spain’s Adrian Vicente Yunta and Moldova’s Vadim Dimitrov were the bronze medallists.

Russia also tasted victory in the women’s under 53kg category after Tatiana Kudashova, the 2016 European champion and 2017 world silver medallist, beat Latvia’s Inese Tarvida 12-8 in the final.

Winning the bronze medals were Turkey’s Zehra Dosucukur and Germany’s Madeline Folgmann.

The only non-Russian competitor to win a gold medal today was Colombia’s Andrea Ramírez Vargas, who defeated Cyprus' Kyriaki Kouttouki 4-2 in the women’s under 46kg final.

Kouttouki was upbeat despite missing out on top honours.

"Today I participated in five tough games, but I had confidence on the mat and that motivated me a lot," she said.

"I feel satisfied with my performances and I am really happy for the results I got against strong opponents."

Ruhat Akalin and Sumeyye Iloglu, both of whom are from Turkey, came away with the bronze medals.

The World Taekwondo President’s Cup for the Europe region is being held for the third time.

It is organised by World Taekwondo Europe and supported by the South Greek Taekwondo Union.

Taking centre stage tomorrow are the men’s under 74kg and over 87kg categories, and the women’s under 62kg and under 73kg divisions.
