Scotland’s Anthony McGill booked his place in the second round of the World Snooker Championships after winning five successive frames to beat Wales’ Ryan Day at the Crucible in Sheffield today.

McGill, a quarter-finalist in 2015, came from 8-5 behind to triumph 10-5 and set up a meeting with China’s Ding Junhui.

The 27-year-old had trailed 6-3 overnight after being outplayed by Day, who registered breaks of 141 and a tournament best of 145.

"I can't believe I won," McGill told BBC Sport.

"The whole way through I was behind and wasn't anywhere near the required level.

"It shows what you can do if you dig in and never give up.

"I didn't play well and maybe that dragged him down a bit.

"I can definitely take confidence from the fact that I played my best snooker towards the end of the match when my back was against the wall."

In the last of the first-round ties to be completed, world number four Judd Trump survived a scare against fellow Englishman Chris Wakelin to prevail 10-9.

Wakelin, the world number 55, managed to force a decider despite having earlier trailed 8-4.

But Trump, who lost to world number 61 Rory McLeod of England at the same stage last year, held his nerve to claim victory.

Awaiting the 2011 finalist in the last-16 is England's Ricky Walden.

The best-of-25-frame second-round action also begun today.

Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen is 5-3 ahead against England’s Joe Perry, who beat compatriot and reigning champion Mark Selby in the first round.

England’s Barry Hawkins, the runner-up in 2013, holds the same lead over China’s Lyu Haotian.

Action in Sheffield is due to continue tomorrow.
