The Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF) welcomed the International University Sports Federation (FISU) into their organisation at the General Assembly here at the SportAccord Summit here today.

The introduction of FISU into the ARISF fold sees them become the 38th member of the organisation.

ARISF Presdient Raffaele Chiulli, also President of the International Union of Powerboating (UIM), believes the introduction of FISU into the organisation will help strengthen its links with educational organisations and young people.

"It is very good to have FISU as a member because education is going to play more and more of a key role in bridging the gaps between sport and society in general," he said.

"Our athletes can be role models and can have a dual career, with an active part in the education process."

FISU President Oleg Matytsin told insidethegames that his organisation was delighted at their ARISF inclusion.

"For FISU, becoming a member of ARISF is a very important step forward," he said.

"We highly value this opportunity to make sure that university sport continues to contribute to the Olympic Movement in a very significant way.

"Our competitions are vital stepping stones for elite athletes; the world’s universities provide great foundations for the future careers of those athletes, and it is as students that young adults can learn about the choices that make a healthy and active life."
