With six places at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aries up for grabs today, the Italian made a real statement of intent.

The teenager was the best performer by a distance in the ranking round of the fencing competition with 33 victories and just two defeats.

This world record-breaking performance allowed her to start the laser run event in the competition with a large 45-second lead.

As was the case in the fencing event, Rinaudo showed no signs of being under pressure and once again emerged triumphant in the laser run.

Her excellent performances throughout the day ensured she finished top of the rankings with a points total of 1053.

Following her win, Rinaudo said: “It was a fantastic day, the whole day.

“I’m so satisfied and this was my last opportunity because it’s my last year at under-19 level.

"It’s such a fantastic result.

“I had a problem with my second shoot, which was not really good, and I said in my mind to remain concentrating and this was the result.

“I want to go to the Youth Olympic Games. It is my dream.”

Compatriot Maria Lea Lopez finished second with 1040 points whilst China's Gu Yewen rounded off the podium with a total of 1036.

Viacheslav Malishev, UPIM executive board member for development said the under-19 competition is an excellent platform for young athletes.

“We witnessed a great competition today, and the two days before as well with some great semi-finals,” he commented.

“It’s the biggest under-19 World Championship in UIPM history and you can see the great preparation by athletes from 35 countries from around the globe, and we saw a very interesting laser run with lots of supporters following their teams.

“The message is clear: modern pentathlon is a global sport around the world, both genders are represented very strongly and I cannot recall when there were more girls than boys at a competition.

“It’s a great step in Modern Pentathlon development and a great message to the Olympic society.”
