Hungary's Liza Pusztai successfully defended her women's cadets sabre title on day five of the Junior and Cadets World Fencing Championships in Verona.

The 16-year-old, also wjnner of a bronze medal in yesterday's junior competition, held onto her under-17 title from last year’s Championships in Plovdiv in Bulgaria.

She beat Mexico’s Natalia Botello by a 15-11 scoreline at the Cattolica Center in the Italian city.

The bronze medal was shared by beaten semi-finalists Alina Klyuchnikova of Russia and Alexis Anglade of the United States.

The men's cadet sabre title was won by Romania's Andrei Pastin, who recorded a 15-10 victory over Robert Vidovszky of the US.

The bronze medals were shared by Hungary's Krisztian Rabb and Alonso Santamaria of Spain.

More than 1,250 young fencers have descended on Verona for the International Fencing Federation event.

Junior team events in sabre are due take place tomorrow.
