Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg claimed her first major title after beating South Korea’s Inbee Park in a mammoth eight-hole play-off at the ANA Inspiration in California.

Lindberg secured victory at the Mission Hills County Club with a birdie from 25 feet on the par-four 10th.

Seven-time major winner Park had the opportunity to extend the contest, but failed to convert her birdie chance from 15 feet.

"It felt like too big a dream to come true but it has," Lindberg told the Golf Channel.

"I remember writing some goals in high school about the dream scenario to win a major and leave a mark in history.

"I've probably given my dad so many heart attacks over the last few days."

Lindberg’s previous best result at a major was a tie for fifth at the 2015 US Open.

The Swede led for all four rounds of the ANA Inspiration.

Her maiden major triumph has seen her rise 61 places in the world rankings to number 34.

Lindberg and Park finished tied on 15-under in regulation play and could not be separated after four play-off holes yesterday before darkness descended.

It took the contest to a fifth day for the first time in tournament history.

United States’ Jennifer Song was eliminated from the competition on the third play-off hole, having managed a par when her two rivals achieved birdies.
