Three number one seeds exited at the first round stage in a day of surprise results at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Orléans Masters at the Palais des Sports.

German mixed doubles pairing Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich were the first victims of the day as, despite winning the first game 21-15 in their match against Indonesian duo Andika Ramadiansyah and Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso, they lost by a 2-1 scoreline overall after the Indonesians won the final two games 21-15, 21-19.

Spain's Beatriz Corrales, who said she fancied her chances of taking home the trophy this week, was the next favourite to be on the end of a shock defeat as she lost to Japan's unseeded player Shiori Saito by a convincing 21-17, 21-13 scoreline.

Indian pairing Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy did not even make the court for their men's doubles match against Malaysians Tang Jie Chen and Pang Ron Hoo, meaning the Malaysians were awarded a walkover victory.

It was also a bad day for several second seeded players.

Women's doubles duo Anastasia Chervyakova and Olga Morozova of Russia lost 21-13, 21-19 against Indonesians Mychelle Crhystine Bandaso and Winny Oktavina Kandow whilst Brazil's Ygor Coelho went down to unseeded Sam Parsons of England in the men's singles by a 21-12, 21-19 scoreline.

Bandaso’s participation in the women’s doubles upset was her second shock victory of the day after she was involved in the aforementioned mixed doubles win over number one seeds Lamsfuss and Herttrich.

The event continues tomorrow.
