Russian Uliana Batashova topped the women's qualification standings as the second International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup got underway in Los Angeles.

Batashova secured one of the 36 places in the final on Wednesday (March 28) with a score of 1,035 points in the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games host city.

Her compatriot Gulnaz Gubaydullina, the reigning world champion, and Mexico's Tamara Vega also qualified with impressive performances as both athletes registered totals of 1,016 points at the Fairplex events complex in Pomona in Los Angeles County.

South Korean Kim Sun-woo and Oliver Mayan of Mexico were next on the list having each amassed 1,015 points.

France arrived in the American city keen to continue their domination of the World Cup circuit in the early stages of the campaign.

Elodie Clouvel, winner of the opening event of the season in Cairo, did just about enough today as she qualified in 34th place on 984 points.

The Rio 2016 silver medallist will be hoping for improved form when she competes in the final.

Britain’s London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Samantha Murray marked her World Cup return by securing her final berth, qualifying 18th having scored 1,007 points.

The event is due to continue tomorrow with men's qualification.
