Thornhill and Scott stopped the clock at 1min 05.079sec in the one kilometre event to secure the title in style at the Barra Olympic Park Velodrome.

The time beat the previous mark set by Thornhill and pilot Rachel James at the 2014 World Championships in Aguascalientes in Mexico.

Australia's Jessica Gallagher and Madison Janssen took the silver medal and Belgium's Griet Hoet and Anneleen Monsieur earned the bronze.

The other world record broken today came in the women's C4 individual pursuit as Australia's Emily Petricola clocked a time of 3:54.501 to qualify fastest for the final.

Shawn Morelli was to get revenge on Petricola for breaking her world record as the American stormed to victory in the gold medal race in 3:56.576.

Meg Lemon of Australia clinched the bronze medal.

There was further tandem success for Britain as world record holder Neil Fachie and his pilot Matthew Rotherham led home a one-two in the one kilometre time trial.

Fachie and Rotherham were the only pair to go under the one-minute mark as they crossed the line in 59.686sec.

Compatriots James Ball and pilot Peter Mitchell were forced to settle for silver, while the bronze medal went to The Netherlands’ Tristan Bangma and Patrick Bos.

Reigning Paralympic gold medallist Jozef Metelka of Slovakia successfully defended his men's C4 individual pursuit crown as he beat Australian Kyle Bridgwood in a repeat of last year's final by clocking a time of 4:30.584.

Jaco Van Gass picked up another medal for Britain as he saw off the challenge of American Jacob Waters in the ride for bronze.

Crystal Lane-Wright maintained the success for the British team with victory in the women's C5 individual pursuit race.

Lane-Wright finished in 1:19.403 to defeat New Zealand's Nicole Murray, while 2017 world champion Samantha Bosco of the United States took the bronze.

The event in the 2016 Paralympic Games host city is due to conclude tomorrow.
