Dominican Republic beat Argentina as the Pan American qualifier for the Women's Baseball World Cup began in Santo Domingo.

The host nation were in fine form on the opening day of the tournament as they claimed a comfortable 13-3 win over their South American opponents at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium.

It marked a disappointing debut for Argentina, who are competing at a women's World Baseball Softball Confederation-sanctioned tournament for the first time.

Puerto Rico led Mexico 3-2 in the other match to be held today before play was suspended due to rain in the sixth inning.

The contest between the two sides will resume tomorrow morning.

The four nations are competing in a round-robin group, with the top two teams booking their place at this year's World Cup in Viera in Florida.

The Puerto Ricans are the only country who have graced the World Cup stage before, in 2010.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday (March 25) with the qualified nations joining hosts United States, Canada, Cuba, Venezuela, Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, The Netherlands and Australia.

World Cup action will take place at the USSSA Space Coast Complex between August 22 and 31.
