Grant Robertson, the country's Minister for Sport, confirmed the news while in Auckland.

According to NZOC, it will help more women and girls in the country get involved in sport.

"We need to harness the opportunity to promote health, well-being and opportunity for New Zealand women and girls through sport," NZOC chief executive Kereyn Smith said. 

"We know that sport can influence lives for the better and this needs to apply to all parts of our population. 

"The IWG (International Working Group on Women and Sport) Secretariat and Conference, and the four-year lead up will give us the focus, the international connections and influence we need to up our game."

Smith added: "As the New Zealand Olympic Committee, we are committed to using this opportunity to promote and support gender equality within the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Movements with a focus on the Oceania region. 

"We have the opportunity now to add even more support these important global initiatives.

"We're delighted to have the support of the Hon. Grant Robertson who shared his vision for increased participation, leadership and contribution of girls and women in sport in announcing us as hosts."

As host of the Secretariat, New Zealand will oversee the Brighton and Helsinki declarations on women in sport, which support gender balance around the world.

They will become hosts in September and stage the World Conference on Women in Sport in 2022.

The 7th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport is due to take place in Gaborone in Botswana between May 17 and 20.
