Finland claimed the first mixed team trap gold medal in the history of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup today as Satu Makela-Nummela and Vesa Tornroos climbed atop the podium in Guadalajara in Mexico.

An impressive streak of 34 consecutive hits saw the duo rise from fifth to first position and build a comfortable lead that allowed them to secure victory with 44 out of 50 targets at the Code Paradero Shooting Range.

This was despite them opening their final by missing four of their first 10 targets.

Being the first official score recorded, Finland's 44 is also a world record in the event.

China's Zhang Xinqiu and He Weidong amassed the highest qualification score along with Makela-Nummela and Tornroos, but they had to settle for the silver medal with a total of 41 hits.

The pair missed three of their last 10 clays and failed to take advantage of their rivals' few mistakes.

The podium was completed by the United States' Aeriel Alease Skinner and Mick Alton Wertz, who took bronze by hitting 33 out of 40 targets.

Another Chinese team, composed of Wang Xiaojing and Chen Yuxi, placed fourth with 28 crushed clays out of 35.

San Marino's Alessandra Perilli and Gian Marco Berti followed in fifth spot with 22 hits out of 30.

Italy's Maria Lucia Palmitessa and Emanuele Buccolieri were the first couple to leave the match, at the 25-target mark, and finished in sixth place with 19 crushed clays.

Action in Guadalajara is due to continue tomorrow.

Finals are scheduled to take place in the women's 50 metres rifle three positions and the men's 25m rapid fire pistol events.
