Brothers Mohamed and Marwan Elshorbagy both advanced to the second round of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Canary Wharf Classic on the opening day of the event.

World number one Mohamed was hoping to make a winning return to the tournament, having not participated for the past five years.

The Egyptian enjoyed a straightforward start to the event, as he claimed a 11-6, 11-6 win over compatriot Mazen Hesham at East Wintergarden in London.

The tournament is the first ranking PSA World Tour event to be played using a best-of-three games scoring format up until the semi-finals and final, where it will revert to the traditional best-of-five scoring.

"I knew he would be good in a best of three as well because of the shots he plays," Mohamed said.

"So, I had to be on my toes and be sharp from the very first point.

"I'm just really glad my plan worked out in the end."

The Egyptian world champion could face his brother Marwan in the semi-finals should they both progress to that stage of the tournament.

Marwan showed impressive form in his opening match, as he claimed a 11-5, 14-12 win over Colombia’s Miguel Angel Rodriguez.

England’s Daryl Selby came through one of the closest matches of the day, as the local player came from behind to beat Australia’s Cameron Pilley.

Having lost the opening game 11-7, Selby battled back to win the next two 11-8, 11-5 to reach the second round.

There was also a win for Germany’s Simon Rösner, who beat Swiss qualifier Nicolas Mueller 11-7, 11-5.

He will now meet Mohamed Elshorbagy in the second round.
