The choice of the mascots comes following a vote where pupils from 16,769 schools were allowed to choose one of three mascot pairings.

These were taken from an initial 2,042 mascot entries from the public, with "choice A" now coming out on top.

The winning mascots, which will be named later in the year, were designed by Ryo Taniguchi, a character designer and illustrator whose work has been featured at various exhibitions in Japan.

The mascot voting process was part of Tokyo 2020's national education programme "Yoi Don!" which translates as "Get Set".

The programme was designed to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to schools across Japan and allow students to participate in educational activities linked to the Games, including learning about the values of both the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

Ryohei Miyata, chairman of the Mascot Selection Panel, expressed her delight at the winning designs.

"The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games finally have their mascots," he said.

"This means a lot, especially in Japan.

"I cannot wait to see these two characters coming to life in the stadiums, on the streets and on TV.

"The children selected two mascots that embody both ancient tradition and new innovation.

"I believe this is an excellent choice since Tokyo 2020's branding vision is 'innovation from harmony', which implies that innovation will occur when the old and the new of Tokyo and Japan come together."

The Mascot Selection Panel will now decide on the names for the mascots with their official debut set to come in July or August.

The blue Olympic mascot is said to embody both old tradition and new innovation and have a strong sense of justice, as well as possess immense athletic ability.

It also has a special power, which allows it to teleport.

The pink Paralympic mascot is said to be a very calm individual, however, it can become very powerful if required and has a large amount of inner strength alongside its love of nature, allowing it to talk with stones and the wind.

The Paralympic mascot also has telekinetic abilities, which allow it to move objects just by looking at them.

Although the two mascots have opposing personalities, they are said to have a great respect for each other and are good friends.

Both mascots are also said to be very hospitable and always try their best to encourage everyone.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will take place from July 24 to August 9 with the Paralympics running from August 25 to September 6.
