The schedule for the rugby sevens competitions at this year's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast has been announced.

The tournaments at Robina Stadium will start on April 13 with the women's pool matches, beginning with Canada against South Africa, before the men's pool matches begin and end the following day.

South Africa against Scotland will be the final pool match, in the men's competition.

Only the top-ranked team in the four men's pools will advance to the semi-finals, whilst the top two teams from the two women's pools will qualify for the last four.

The final day of the competition will take place on April 15 with the medal matches in both the men's and women's tournaments taking place.

Gold Coast 2018 chief executive Mark Peters said he was looking forward to the competition.

"Rugby Sevens will be conducted over the final three days of the Games and in fact, the women's and men's gold medal matches hold the honour of being the final medal events at Gold Coast 2018," he said.

"With the Australian women's team looking to defend their [Olympic] gold medal from Rio, it's going to be an exciting competition."

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Louise Martin added: "Rugby sevens has been a popular addition to the Commonwealth Games programme since it was first introduced in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1998.

"As the leading international sporting body for all gender equality issues, the CGF is proud that, along with the Gold Coast 2018 Organising Committee, we have been able to introduce women's rugby sevens to the Commonwealth Games for the first time at Gold Coast 2018.

"The introduction of women's rugby sevens for Gold Coast 2018 is a significant milestone in the implementation of the CGF's Gender Equality Strategy, with an equal number of men's and women's medal events being contested for the very first time in Commonwealth Games history."

Hosts Australia have been paired with rivals England in Pool B of the men's tournament, with Jamaica and Samoa also involved.

The home side will play Samoa first.

South Africa, Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia will play in Pool A with New Zealand, Canada, Kenya and Zambia in Pool C.

Olympic champions Fiji will meet Wales, Uganda and Sri Lanka in Pool D.
