The Sopka building was completed recently with Russian President Vladimir Putin claiming was impressed by the good level of its preparations for the Games during his recent visit.

This week will now see the venue welcome young skiers, as well as basketball and volleyball players from the Krasnoyarsk College of the Olympic Reserve for training sessions.

The main hall at Sopka will also be used for children’s football and gymnastics training.

New trampolines have also been installed for young ski jumpers and freestyle skiers.

The first main competition to take place at Sopka will be the kickboxing championship of the Siberian Federal District, due to take place from Wedneday until Sunday (February 21 to 25) before a dancing competition for Russian boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 13 is hosted from March 3 to 4.

At the end of the year, Sopka will witness one of eight test events taking place to help prepare the Krasnoyarsk region for the 2019 Winter Universiade, hosting a snowboard competition.

A medical centre, press centre and food hall will also be in operation during the competition events over the course of the year.

Sopka is one of seven venues being build as part of the Winter Sports Academy cluster for the 2019 Winter Universiade.

The second block of the Sopka building will contain a state-of-the-art medical facility for athletes and is the only centre of its kind beyond the Ural mountains.

The 2019 Winter Universiade is due to take place from March 2 to 19.
