The IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup season got underway in Eger ©IWAS

Hungary’s Richárd Osváth claimed home gold on the opening day of the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in Eger.

Osváth came out on top in men’s category A foil event at the Hotel Eger and Park.

His route to the gold medal included a 15-4 win over France’s Damien Tokatlian in the quarter-finals before beating Poland’s Dariusz Pender in the last four.

Emanuele Lambertini provided the opposition in the final after he had earned a dramatic 15-14 success over Russia’s Nikita Nagaev.

Osváth overcame Lambertini in the gold medal match, winning 15-10.

Russia celebrated success in the category B competition, top seed Albert Kamalov taking the gold.

He edged past Britain’s Dimitri Coutya 15-14 in the semi-finals to set up a meeting with Ukraine’s Anton Datsko, a 15-4 winner against Brazil’s Jovane Guissone.

Kamalov delivered a dominant display in the final, beating Datsko 15-7.

Russia’s Alena Evdokimova and Hungary’s Amarilla Veres went head-to-head in the women’s epee final category A event.

The pair had earned 15-11 victories over Poland’s Marta Fidrych and Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Krajnyak in their respective semi-finals.

Evdokimova clinched a 15-11 win over Veres in the final.

The women’s foil and men’s epee is due take place tomorrow before sabre events bring the World Cup to a conclusion on Sunday (February 18).
