Italy’s Michela Moioli and Pierre Vaultier of France passed their final form test before the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang with flying colours on the second day of competition at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard Cross World Cup in Feldberg.

Moioli reproduced her winning effort of the previous day, while the current men’s Olympic champion went one better than his second-place behind surprise Austrian winner Julian Lueftner at the German resort yesterday, securing the 22nd World Cup win of his career.

In contrast to the cloudy, foggy conditions of the previous day, today’s competition took place on ideal snow conditions under a clear blue sky, with big crowds cheering for home favourites Paul Berg and Martin Noerl, who finished third and fourth in the big final behind Vaultier and Italy’s Michele Godino, earning his first World Cup podium place.

Vaultier has now featured in the top three in five of the six World Cup events staged on this 675 metres long course so far.

"Today was a very good day for me," Vaultier said.

"Unlike yesterday, where I still got second, I was feeling good the whole day.

"And that gives me a confidence boost, not especially the win. It's more the way I rode today."

He nevertheless earned a very close decision over Godino, still smarting from his disqualification for "intentional contact" in his previous day’s heat.

"That was my redemption," said Godino.

"I was really angry today."

Godino added: "I'm super happy about the first podium of my career.

"It's a really important result for me as it was the last race prior the Olympics.

"I'm ready for the Olympics, and I hope for another podium there."

Godino’s Italian team-mate Moioli also has very serious Pyeongchang 2018 podium hopes, having maintained an astonishing momentum on the run-in.

The 22-year-old from Bergamo finished ahead of the French trio of Charlotte Bankes, Chloe Trespeuch and Nelly Moenne Loccoz to extend a streak of seven consecutive podium finishes, of which four of the last six have been wins.

She has also extended her overall World Cup lead.

"Today, the final was very difficult," Moioli said.

"I was up against three strong girls from France, it was super cool but a tough fight.

"It's a big confidence boost for sure but the Olympics are a totally different race.

"We will see what happens."

The FIS Snowboard World Cup tour will now take a break and is continue after Pyeongchang 2018 in La Molina in Spain on March 2 and 3.
