Russia raced into a 2-0 lead within five minutes of the match thanks to two goals of Almaz Mirgazov, to the delight of the 8.967-strong partisan crowd at the Arena Yerofey.

12-time champions Sweden pulled a goal back through Per Hellmyrs to make it 2-1 in the 16th minute but Russia restored their two-goal cushion going into half-time thanks to Alan Dzhusoev's strike.

Sweden started the second half well with Johan Löfstedt giving his side hope with the score at 3-2, only for Russia to once again restore their two-goal lead through Maksim Ishkeldin.

However, the defending champions suddenly raised their game on the hour mark and scored two goals in three minutes through Daniel Berlin and Adam Gilljam to make the game 4-4.

Unfortunately for them, they failed to build on this momentum and Mirgazov scored the winner, and his third of the match, for Russia in the 78th minute to hand his side the title.

This was Russia’s fourth win in five years after victories in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Earlier on in the day, Finland secured the bronze medal thanks to an 8-4 win over Kazakhstan.

There was some joy for Kazakhstan, however, as Rauan Isaliyev's two goals ensured he finished top of the tournament's goalscoring charts with 19 to his name.
