Pieter Devos and Espoir won the penultimate competition of the International Equestrian Federation World Cup Jumping Western European League in Bordeaux.

The Belgian was among 10 riders to make it into a bumper jump-off round at the Park des Espositions de Bordeaux.

It followed the riders achieving clear rounds during the first stage of the final, with Devos posting the second fastest time in 1min 1.83sec.

Germany’s Marcus Ehning had topped the standings on horse Cornado NRW, having ended in 1:00.68.

There was disappointment for World Cup leader Kevin Staut, as despite the Frenchman posting the second fastest time in front of a home crowd, four penalties ruled him out of the jump-off.

Devos remained consistent in the extra round, with no penalties and a time of 36.53 seconds placing him top of the standings.

Silver was claimed by Ehning, who finished in a slower time of 38.09.

The podium was completed by Spain’s Manuel Fernandez Saro, who clocked 38.40 seconds on Cannavaro 9.

Switzerland’s Paul Estermann was the only other rider to not pick up a penalty during the competition, but missed out on the podium.

Riding on Lord Pepsi, the duo did not have the same fizz as their rivals on the course, as their time of 39.47 was not fast enough to secure a top three finish.

The event will be followed by the final leg in Gothenburg later this month.
