Vice president Marian Dymalski is leading the FISU delegation to the New York village, which also includes secretary general Eric Saintrond.

Potential venues will be visited including the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, the Olympic Center ice rinks, the Olympic Training Center, the ski jumping complex, the North Elba Show Grounds and the Olympic Speedskating Oval.

The Whiteface and Gore Mountain ski venues, Plattsburgh International Airport and an undisclosed location for a potential Athletes' Village will also be inspected.

"Lake Placid presented a very strong and well-developed bid dossier to FISU," said Saintrond. 

"Now we are doing our due diligence and seeing how this plan could best come to life. 

"But one thing is certain, there is great potential here to put on another memorable Winter Universiade for the student-athletes that leaves lasting benefits to Lake Placid and the surrounding communities in the North Country."

Lake Placid is twice a host of the Winter Olympics, having done so in 1932 and 1980.

It also hosted the Winter Universiade in 1972.

Many of the existing venues would be used if the 2022 bid is successful but FISU said that some of the facilities are "showing their age".

Lake Placid was boosted, however, thanks to $62.5 million (£45 million/€51 million) of capital funding which has been included in the budget of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

This could be used to upgrade sporting infrastructure. 

"We had very good memories from hosting the FISU World University Games back in 1972 and then 1974 of course came around and we got the Olympic bid for 1980," Lake Placid Mayor Craig Randall said. 

"There was this strong momentum in town. 

"There was this very high community spirit that the FISU event generated. 

"The 1980 Olympic bid really became a reality in my opinion from the good memories we had here from hosting the FISU Universiade."

The American venue has been a consistent host of World Cup and World Championship competitions for several winter sports.

It is due to host the 2021 International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Championships and the winter edition of the International Children's Games will also be held there in 2019.

Should the bid succeed, New York would host the Universiade for the third time.

The state also held the summer version of the event in Buffalo in 1993.
