France and Sweden won the first gold medals as the International Ski Federation Nordic Junior World Championships began in Goms in Switzerland.

Cross-country action took centre stage on day one, with the junior sprint events contested for men and women.

After qualification rounds, France's Tom Mancini won the men's event by crossing the line first in the A-Final.

He held off Norwegian Joergen Lippert following a fine duel, with Valeria Grond from Switzerland finishing third to win a home bronze medal.

In the women's event, the A-Final was won by Sweden's Moa Lundgren.

She won a Scandinavian battle against Norway's Kristine Skistad Stavaas, who had to settle for the silver medal.

Sweden also won bronze thanks to Frida Karlsson.

"I have done very well," said Lundgren afterwards

"I am of course pleased that my plan went well."

Action will continue tomorrow with the men's and women's under-23 sprints.

Competition at the Championships is being shared by Goms and Kandersteg.

As well as cross-country, ski jumping and Nordic combined are part of the programme.
