Wise faced the challenge of several Olympic team-mates in the men's ski superpipe competition in Colorado, but set a high standard from the start of the final.

The Sochi 2014 gold medallist achieved a first run total of 90.66 points to immediately move to the top of the standings.

Wise was unable to improve on the score in his second run, which saw him drop to second place when Alex Ferreria took the lead.

Ferreria produced an impressive final run to finish the competition with a high score of 91.33.

It would not prove enough to claim victory, as Wise immediately responded to put a marker down for the Olympics.

He bettered his first run total by achieving a score of 94.00, giving him a third Winter X-Games gold of his career.

The result also continued Wise's impressive form, having won gold at the International Ski Federation Freestyle World Cup in Snowmass earlier this month.

Ferreria was forced to settle for the silver medal, while the podium was rounded off by Torin Yater-Wallace, as the American scored 86.66.

Maddie Bowman, who also earned halfpipe gold at Sochi 2014, topped the standings in the women's ski superpipe final.

The 24-year-old produced a strong performance in the second run of the competition, which saw her rewarded with a score of 92.00.

She held off the challenge of compatriot Brita Sigourney, who finished as the runner-up on 90.33.

The podium was completed by Cassie Shape, with the Canadian skier ending on 88.66 after an impressive third run.

Snowboard slopestyle and men’s big air are set to provide the focus of tomorrow’s competition.
