Egypt's Nour El Tayeb recorded a 3-1 win over compatriot and world champion Raneem El Welily at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tournament of Champions in New York City.

World number seven El Tayeb recovered from a game down in her match against number two seed El Welily to win 6-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 in a close 43-minute match at Grand Central Terminal.

After her surprise win, 24-year-old El Tayeb said: "Raneem is not just the maverick of squash, she's one of my idols.

"I learn a lot from her on and off the court, she's the most graceful, most talented Egyptian female squash player."

Meanwhile, in the men's draw, El Tayeb's husband and compatriot Ali Farag completed a 3-1 win over fellow Egyptian Ramy Ashour to end the three-time Tournament of Champions winner's 12-match unbeaten run.

Farag went 2-0 up after scores of 11-7 and 12-10 in the first two games but Ashour looked to be coming back into the match after winning the third game 11-7.

Farag, however, held his nerve to close the match with an 11-5 win in the final game.

This was the first time that Ashour had lost a PSA Tournament of Champions match since 2010.

After his win, Farag said: "Describing Ramy as tricky is an understatement.

"On his day he's the best player on tour and everyone knows that.

"I just tried to forget about who I was playing.

"At times, I look at him as the squash god and because of that I sometimes forget to play my own game, so today the most important thing was to focus on my own game plan that was devised by my team and I think it went well."

Number three seed Farag will now face compatriot Tarek Momen, husband of El Welily, in the semi-finals after he ended Australian outsider Ryan Cuskelly's dream tournament by beating him 3-0 in 39 minutes.

Yesterday's matches decided the other semi-final between Grégory Gaultier of France and Germany's Simon Rösner

El Tayeb's reward for her victory against El Welily will see her come up against France's Camille Serme, who defeated 2014 PSA Tournament of Champions title winner Nicol David of Malaysia 3-1.

The other women's semi-final will see recent PSA Saudi Masters champion Nour El Sherbini come up against last year's PSA Tournament of Champions runner-up Laura Massaro of England.

El Sherbini defeated England's Sarah-Jane Perry 3-0 in her quarter-final whilst Massaro came out on top against Egyptian Nouran Gohar by the same scoreline.

The semi-finals will take place tomorrow.
