United States claimed the first gold medal of the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Longboard Surfing Championships on Riyue Bay in Wanning today.

Tony Silvagni, Rachael Tilly, Tory Gilkerson and Kevin Skvarna combined to impressive effect to triumph in the team competition.

They advanced through the rounds to set up a final against Australia.

The competition saw each athlete catch two waves with their scores added together to create an overall team total.

Six of the US' eight waves were judged to have been worth more than seven points, with their quartet ending 24 points clear of Australia in the final.

"Congratulations to Team USA for a dominating performance in the ISA Aloha Cup today at Riyue Bay," said Fernando Aguerre, ISA President.

"Their team camaraderie, talent and national pride shined as they earned the first gold medal of the event.

"We are arriving at the final stretch of the competition and with a promising swell on the forecast, we could have an epic finish to the competition."

Bronze was claimed by Peru, with their team overcoming Brazil in the battle for third place in the competition.

Brazil were given the copper medal for their fourth place finish.
